You do not find many games for Linux and
the available games are often too bad?
But there is a lot of activity in this area. We want to present
two pearls of the action genre.

Finding good games for Linux takes a long time if they are not called
Quake or DOOM. A perfect address to start your search for example is http://www.linuxgames.com/.
There you find news about Linux and games.
Maelstrom is the
Linux
version of the Apple game with the same name. The game bases on
the well known classic game Asteroids. It has an improved
graphic
and a fantastic sound. Expanded with "Power-Ups" and different events
like black holes, supernovas, shields and hostile heat-seeking mines
a great game is born. It guarantees fun for a long time while trying to
reach new records.

But Maelstrom
has more features: It supports the possibility to play with two other partners
in the net. You can fight against each other and try to hit the
other among the flying stones, or you try to survive the levels together.
But with two players this canbe very complicated because it happens
that someone flies in the line of fire and gets hit unintentionally.
After this happens you will certainly loose your former aim and return
fire.
Believe us, this makes a lot of fun!
Bzflag is a multiplayer
network
game. Each player steers a tank in a fenced area with buildings, obstacles
and big teleportation doors. Two different variations of the game
are included. Either you try to "Capture the Flag" of you kill all other
tanks in a deathmatch. Team deathmatch is as possible as a mixture
between team and single deathmatch because you are not forced to join a
team.

The specialty of the game is the graphic. Fantastic 3D animations
(with
support of 3Dfx-cards)with glide drivers are offered. For reality the game
offers moon phases, a moving sun with corresponding correct shadows and
moving stars.
With flags placed in the area you are able to increase your tank with
special abilities. stealth-technology makes you invisible on enemy
radar, homing-missles guaranty hits and many more abilities are
offered.
The internet also offers you many public game servers where you
can find other bzflag fans. A list of the IP-addresses of these servers
are presented at the homepage
of bzflag. But
you need a good internet connection to play smoothly, because the data-exchange
is very high. A close server seems necessary for a good play.
The program has a server included and it is not a problem to
start a game at bzflag on your own intranet and invite friends to
join the game.
It seems bzflag
is one of the best free Linux games.
